Now Proms

No Worries Now holds annual proms for teens who may not live long enough to attend their own proms. For the past five years, proms have been held in Los Angeles and San Francisco, and in June 2012 No Worries Now will hold proms in LA, SF, Sacramento, Detroit and Washington, D.C. These proms are 100% free for participants, and attract up to 500 teen patients and their guests to exciting venues like Sony Studios and Madame Tussauds Wax Museum. Our proms include a red carpet photo shoot, catered gourmet dinner, free prom dresses and shoes (donated by celebrities like Kim Kardashian), celebrity appearances (such as Twilight’s Anna Kendrick and High School Musical’s Monique Coleman), shout-out videos from stars like Snoop Dogg, complimentary corsages and boutonnieres, and an unforgettable night that provides teen patients the opportunity to forget their worries, meet new friends, and just dance. It’s not just an event, it’s magic.

Saving Lives Now

Many of the patients who attend our proms can benefit now from an umbilical cord blood transplant. Cord blood, like bone marrow, already cures more than seventy diseases, including leukemia, lymphoma, and testicular cancer. It is collected after birth with no risk to the mother or child, and can be frozen and stored for up to fifteen years. Yet, for lack of an adequate public banking system, the overwhelming majority of cord blood units are thrown in the trash (98%) or privately banked (1%) for personal use (and thus not available to the public). Meanwhile, thousands of patients die every year while waiting to find a match in the public system. No Worries Now is committed to improving the odds that our patients will find a cord blood match by helping to publicly bank one cord blood unit at a time. Collecting one unit to publicly bank costs $200, which can be raised by selling our “Saving Lives Now” wristbands.

The Ashburn-Cordasco Pair Program

Our pair program pairs teen patients with teen volunteers based on location, personality, and interests, and sends each pair on monthly outings so that patients have the opportunity to feel like normal teens. The yearlong program also includes group outings, and culminates at the following year’s prom. Now Pairs was inspired by our spokesgirl, Samantha Ashburn, who passed away of osteosarcoma shortly after her 16th birthday.
